Once a year, around the Fourth of July, we reflect on the strength and courage a fledgling country summoned to face down a global superpower determined to subjugate them. With the Declaration of Independence, countrymen (and women) of all nationalities joined together to say we are one country, we are the United States of America. We also remember our military service members who continue to protect that hard-won independence.
At Castle & Cooke Mortgage, we believe in supporting our service members. Not only do we offer an array of VA mortgage products that open the doors of homeownership to our Veterans, we also support organizations that help our military service members and their families. One way we’ve been able to give back to our Veterans is through our 2018 Year of Service campaign. Through this program, our Quality Control (QC) department was inspired to help the Fisher House of Salt Lake, an organization that provides housing for Veterans and their families who have to travel for medical treatment. In addition to collecting and donating much-needed items, the QC team wrote notes of encouragement to comfort them during their time away from home. “It felt good knowing we might provide some comfort in a difficult time,” said Castle & Cooke Mortgage Director of Quality Control, Kori Seeley. “Veterans give this country so much. It’s nice to be able to give a little bit back.”
The Castle & Cooke Mortgage Peoria branch also volunteered with an organization focused on supporting service members called Soldier’s Best Friend. This nonprofit pairs canine companions (many in need of rescue) with Veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Training with specialists at Soldier’s Best Friend, dogs and soldiers form bonds that have been shown to relieve many of the symptoms Veterans experience from these disorders. As they like to point out at Soldier’s Best Friend, turning a rescue dog into a therapeutic pet saves two lives at once.
Castle & Cooke Mortgage believes that by supporting our communities we create a stronger country, whether it’s through our VA homeownership opportunities or nonprofit outreach.
This Fourth of July, why not dedicate some time to strengthening your community? Donate some time at a local nonprofit. Have a conversation about democracy with your neighbor. Learn the words to the national anthem so you can sing the loudest at your next baseball game. And the night of the Fourth, keep a bucket of water nearby, just in case those fireworks don’t go as planned.
