Are you ready to take the plunge?

When you picture your dream house, maybe you imagine having friends over for a poolside soiree, or perhaps you hope the neighborhood kids will designate your pool as hangout central. Installing a swimming pool with a home renovation loan could make you the most popular homeowner on the street, but does all that popularity come with a flood of maintenance? Here’s an idea of what you are wading into.

The 4 C’s of Maintenance—Cleaning, Circulation, Chemicals & Consistency.

Swimming pools require a small boat-load of equipment to keep the water crystal clear. The basic cleaning tools include a skimmer, scrub brush and a vacuum—but these rely on that most essential piece of equipment, the telescopic pole. Vacuuming, scrubbing and skimming is a weekly task if you plan to do it all yourself, you may want to invest in some automated tools like a robotic pool vacuum (with a good warranty).

Pool pumps and filters keep water circulating, and that keeps algae and other unsightly messes from forming in your pool. Many experts recommend running pool pumps 24/7, but the rule of thumb is no less than the amount of time it takes to run the entire pool through your filter once a day—usually 10-12 hours. Keeping a pump running can be expensive, but costs may be reduced by running the pump at night or using programmable pumps that have variable speed and timer settings.

The right combination of chemicals will keep your pool sparkling and germ-free, but this means testing. Experts recommend testing for pH, alkalinity and chlorine before adding anything. You will probably have to do this several times a week, and will most likely need to do a chemical “shock” once a week (more often if there has been a lot of activity in the pool). Keep in mind; it is easier to maintain chemical levels than it is to correct them. Treating your water more often may result in using fewer chemicals.

As you can see, your pool will need attention several times a week. Keep in mind that this list doesn’t include monthly checks and treatments, nor seasonal setup and closing. However, consistent upkeep is the key to happy swimming, and just may be the key to your status as the coolest neighbor on the block.
